Equestrian Figure
People: Dogon
Medium: Wood
While the Dogon Equestrian Figure does not necessarily have power in itself, it is an example of how the power and significance of a person can be represented in an object. It is sometimes referenced to power. This figure is carved out of wood and rendered very specifically. The rider is most likely a warrior and leader, due to the bow, quiver, and arrow in which he is equipped. He wears much more elaborate clothes and regalia than what would be seen on someone who is not in a position of power. The fact that he is on a horse at all signifies his power and importance, as is the same in many other cultures. Also, the difference in the relation of size between the rider and horse is significant. The rider is depicted to be much larger than the horse, which is easily regarded as another reference to his superiority and power. Other typical stylistic qualities include the elongated head and nose, almond shaped eyes, and general abstraction or lack of details in the majority of the rendering.
